Description
Jo Landron Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Les Houx comes from one of the domaine’s oldest vineyards and ages 18 months on lees.
Muscadet Sèvre et Maine lies south-east of Nantes, close enough to the Atlantic that salt and freshness are built into the wines. Les Houx, at La Haye-Fouassière, is among Jo Landron’s oldest parcels, farmed biodynamically. The mature, low-yielding vines are rooted in shallow sandy clay rich in quartz and shot through with iron, over gneiss and clay bedrock, and the site gives a denser, fleshier and more complex Muscadet than the norm. Even in warmer years its rocky, acid soils keep the wine fresh. The grapes are hand-harvested and fermented with indigenous yeasts, and the wine spends a lengthy 18 months on lees. Around thirty per cent is now raised in Italian-made Tava amphorae, the rest in glass-lined concrete.
Drinking well now and capable of a decade. Serve at 10-12°C with grilled fish, roast pork or a saffron seafood stew.
