Description
Jo Landron Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Les Houx comes from one of the domaine’s oldest vineyards, on quartz- and iron-rich soils over gneiss at La Haye-Fouassière.
Muscadet Sèvre et Maine lies south-east of Nantes, at the Atlantic end of the Loire, and Melon de Bourgogne is its only grape. Domaine Landron farms biodynamically, and Les Houx is among its oldest and best sites: mature, low-yielding vines rooted in shallow sandy clay shot through with quartz and iron, over a bedrock of gneiss and clay, which gives a denser, fleshier and more complex Muscadet than the domaine’s other cuvées. The rocky, acid soils supply a balancing freshness even in warm seasons. The grapes are hand-harvested and ferment with indigenous yeasts, and the wine ages on its lees for a lengthy 18 months. Landron now uses Italian-made Tava amphorae for 30 per cent of the wine, with the greater part still raised in glass-lined concrete.
Drinking now and capable of five to eight years. Serve at 10-12°C with roast pork, a substantial white fish or a semi-hard cheese.
