Joh Jos Prüm Bernkasteler Lay Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel is a rare gold-capsule Auslese from a slate site on the Bernkastel side of the Mosel.

Lay lies just downstream of the estate's Wehlen holdings, a south-facing slate slope neighbouring the celebrated Doctor vineyard, and it has long been part of the Joh. Jos. Prüm range alongside Wehlen and Graach. Goldkapsel is not a legal category but an estate signal: within the Auslese class, the gold capsule marks limited lots that required multiple passes through the vineyard and draconian selection to pick fruit at exactly the right ripeness. Katharina Prüm describes them as small-production lots of the best Auslese of a vintage, made from stronger grapes with more concentrated juice, usually carrying a certain amount of botrytis. Only a small amount was made here. The step up in power and weight over a standard Auslese is considerable, and these wines age far longer than white-capsule bottlings, shedding sweetness and gaining elegance, harmony and complexity over many decades.

Rewarding now, but at its best after long cellaring. Serve at 8–10°C with robust savoury dishes, cheeses other than blue, or a fruit-based dessert such as crème caramel.
