Joh Jos Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese 2023

Joh Jos Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese is the estate's Auslese from the sundial slope, the site on which its reputation was built.

The Sonnenuhr at Wehlen is the most celebrated vineyard in the Prüm range and among the best known in the Mosel: steep, south-facing blue slate with a sundial set into it in the 1840s. Joh. Jos. Prüm has farmed it since 1911. Auslese here is a matter of power rather than sweetness; the grapes come in riper and more intense, and the wine gains flesh, complexity and length over the Spätlese while keeping a pure, ultra-fine line. Wehlen reads rounder and deeper than Graach, and that distinction sharpens at this level. Slow, cool fermentation, natural residual sugar and low alcohol are constants, as is a release date later than the regional norm.

Already expressive and good for many decades. Serve at 8–10°C with roast pork, game birds, savoury tarts or almost any Japanese dish.
