Joh Jos Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese 375ml 2005

Joh Jos Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese is a mature half-bottle of sweet Mosel Riesling from the estate's home slope at Wehlen.

The Sonnenuhr is a steep, south-facing wall of weathered blue slate above Wehlen, named for the sundial built into it in the 1840s, and Joh. Jos. Prüm has been the site's leading owner since the family holdings were divided in 1911. Auslese comes from later picks of riper bunches; at Prüm the wines ferment slowly and cool, retain a good deal of natural sugar and finish low in alcohol, so weight comes from extract rather than ripeness alone. With age the sweetness recedes and the slate comes forward. This is a soil-driven wine with chalky minerality and pronounced acidity framing a dense, broad palate, where sweetness, structure and time have settled into one another, and earthy, savoury development adds depth. It is a commanding style that rewards slow drinking rather than a quick glass.

Fully mature and drinking now, though in no hurry. Serve at 8–10°C with roast duck, a mature hard cheese or a simple apple tart.
