Joh Jos Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese is a sweet Mosel Riesling from the estate's home vineyard, the sundial slope above Wehlen.

Wehlener Sonnenuhr takes its name from the sundial built into the slope in the 1840s so vineyard workers could tell the time; the site is steep, south-facing blue Devonian slate above the Mosel, and Joh. Jos. Prüm is its most famous owner, at Wehlen since the family holdings were divided in 1911 and run today by Katharina Prüm. Auslese here means later-picked fruit from riper bunches with almost no botrytis involved, so the style stays pure, fresh and finely drawn rather than syrupy. There is a clear step up from Spätlese in depth, flesh and persistence, yet the wine remains poised and digestible. Fermentation is slow and cool, a good deal of natural sugar is left in the wine, and alcohol stays low, which is why these half-bottles carry weight without heaviness.

Seductive young and built to last for decades in the cellar. Serve at 8–10°C with a fruit tart, spiced pork or a washed-rind cheese.
