Joh Jos Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese 1.5L MAGNUM 2024

Joh Jos Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese in magnum is a Mosel Spätlese from the estate's sundial slope, in a format that ages more slowly.

The Sonnenuhr above Wehlen is blue Devonian slate, steep and directly south-facing, and the sundial built into it in the 1840s gives the vineyard its name. Joh. Jos. Prüm has been the site's defining producer for more than a century. Spätlese at the estate remains light in body, but intensity and depth of character rise markedly over the Kabinett: more flesh, more power and enough substance to stand up to richer food, all without obvious sweetness. Katharina Prüm considers Spätlese one of the estate's great food-wine categories. Fermentation is slow and cool, the wines are bottled with natural residual sugar and low alcohol, and a magnum's smaller ratio of air to wine slows the whole process down further still.

Fine now, better in five or ten years and sound for decades beyond that. Serve at 8–10°C with roast pork, duck rillettes or a plate of charcuterie.
