Joh Jos Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese 2023

Joh Jos Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese is a Mosel Spätlese from the sundial slope at Wehlen, the estate's home vineyard.

Wehlener Sonnenuhr climbs steeply above the river on blue Devonian slate, its terraces arranged around the sundial built there in the 1840s, and Joh. Jos. Prüm is the name most closely tied to the site. At Spätlese level the wines are still light in body, but flavour intensity and depth of character increase markedly, with considerably more depth of fruit than the Kabinett and rather less perceptible sweetness than the Prädikat might suggest. What comes instead is more flesh and more power, and therefore a wine that can stand up to richer food. Wehlen gives the rounder, deeper reading of the range against the racier Graach. Fermentation is slow and cool, alcohol finishes low, and the estate releases later than most of its neighbours.

Excellent now, with decades of development ahead of it. Serve at 8–10°C with roast pork, smoked eel or a savoury tart.
