Joh Jos Prüm Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese 2021

Joh Jos Prüm Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese is a naturally sweet Riesling from a steep slate site on the middle Mosel, picked in tries at Auslese ripeness.

Zeltinger Sonnenuhr lies on the steep blue Devonian slate above Zeltingen, on the same great south-facing bend of the river as its more famous neighbour, and tends to give the firmest and most mineral of the estate’s wines. Joh. Jos. Prüm, based at Wehlen and led by Katharina Prüm, is the reference point for Mosel Riesling in this idiom, and Auslese here is a step up in power and intensity rather than simply in sweetness. The fruit is picked in successive tries, in this vintage across the first two weeks of November, and the wines were bottled at 7% alcohol. Fermentation is slow and spontaneous, the wines rest long on their lees in traditional Fuder, and they are released with the faint reductive spritz that has always marked the house style and underwrites their extraordinary longevity. In a cooler year such as this the Auslese wines show a delicacy and detail that riper vintages do not, with the sweetness carried on very high acidity rather than sitting on top of it.

It can be drunk now but will gain for decades, and is too fine for sweet desserts; serve at 8–10°C with roast pork, ceviche, Sichuan or Cantonese dishes, or a plate of washed-rind cheese.
