Joh Jos Prüm Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese 2021

Joh Jos Prüm Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese is a naturally sweet Riesling from the steep slate amphitheatre above Zeltingen.

Zeltinger Sonnenuhr lies on steep blue Devonian slate above Zeltingen, on the same great south-facing bend of the river as its more celebrated neighbour, and usually gives the firmest and most mineral of the estate’s wines. Joh. Jos. Prüm at Wehlen, now led by Katharina Prüm, treats Spätlese as its most versatile category: light in body but intense in flavour, with more flesh and power than the Kabinett wines without necessarily more overt sweetness. Picking is by hand in tries, fermentation is slow and spontaneous, and the wines rest long on their lees in traditional Fuder before release, arriving with the faint spritz that is a house signature and a marker of their capacity to age. The balance sought is between elegance, freshness, racy fruit and the slate-driven minerality particular to this stretch of the middle Mosel.

Already thrilling but built to gain depth for decades; serve at 8–10°C with roast pork, smoked eel or a Sichuan-spiced dish.
