Description
Kracher Auslese Cuvée is a botrytis-affected sweet wine of Chardonnay and Welschriesling and the estate's introduction to its noble sweet range.
Illmitz lies in the Seewinkel, the flat plain east of the Neusiedlersee dotted with shallow salt lakes known locally as the Zicklacken. Autumn mornings there are heavy with fog and the afternoons dry and warm, a rhythm that encourages Botrytis cinerea to concentrate the grapes rather than spoil them. Chardonnay and Welschriesling are the estate's staple pair for this work: Welschriesling holds the acidity and Chardonnay adds flesh. The fruit is picked in successive passes through the vineyard and pressed slowly, and this cuvee is the lightest of the botrytis wines, finishing at 109 grams per litre of residual sugar. It is bottled in half-bottle under screwcap.
Sweet but lively, it suits fruit tarts, blue cheese and foie gras, or drinks well on its own; serve well chilled at around 8 degrees.
