L’Arlésienne Beaujolais-Villages Aux Gauthiers 2022

L'Arlésienne Beaujolais-Villages Aux Gauthiers comes from one of the highest vineyards in Beaujolais, at 520 metres above the Col du Truges.

L'Arlésienne is the Beaujolais project of Benoît Moreau, the Chassagne-Montrachet grower, and it applies Côte d'Or thinking to Gamay. Aux Gauthiers sits at the top of the slope above the commune of Villié-Morgon, at 520 metres, which makes it one of the highest sites in the region and one of the last to ripen; the fruit is picked a full week after Moreau's Chassagne-Montrachet parcels. The vines were planted in the 1940s and 1970s, so there is real age here. Winemaking follows the domaine's Burgundian instincts rather than the classic Beaujolais semi-carbonic route, with 30% whole clusters in the ferment and no oak at all during maturation, so the granite and the altitude speak plainly. The result is a Beaujolais-Villages with lift and cut rather than obvious flesh.

Drink over the next three to five years, lightly chilled, with charcuterie, roast pork or a mushroom tart. Serve at 14-16°C.
