L’Arlésienne Beaujolais-Villages Aux Gauthiers 2023

L’Arlésienne Beaujolais-Villages Aux Gauthiers comes from one of the highest vineyards in Beaujolais, at 520 metres above Villié-Morgon.

L’Arlésienne is the Beaujolais label of Benoît Moreau, a grower better known for his work in Chassagne-Montrachet. Aux Gauthiers sits at the top of the slope above the Col du Truges, in the commune of Villié-Morgon, high enough that the fruit is picked a full week later than his Côte de Beaune parcels. The vines were planted in the 1940s and 1970s, so there is real age here for a wine at Villages level. The winemaking is deliberately plain: 30 per cent whole clusters in the ferment and no oak at any point in the maturation, which leaves the altitude and the granite of the site to shape the wine rather than the cellar.

Drink now and over the next three to four years. Serve at 16°C, lightly chilled if you prefer, with charcuterie, roast chicken or grilled sausages.
