Description

L'Arlésienne Chiroubles Chatenay is made from half a hectare of mature vines on the steep granite of the highest cru in Beaujolais.

Chiroubles sits between Morgon and Fleurie at around 400 metres and more, the loftiest of the ten Beaujolais crus, and its upper slopes are known for wines of lacy texture and brightness rather than weight. Benoît Moreau, better known for his whites in Chassagne-Montrachet, farms half a hectare of mature vines in the steep granitic terroir of Chatenay under the L'Arlésienne label. The approach is closer to Burgundy than to traditional Beaujolais: only 30% whole bunches, a slower ferment and no semi-carbonic treatment. Moreau likes the transparency of amphora for this cuvée, and the wine is racked into stainless steel after a year, so nothing sits between the granite and the fruit. The wine is floral and red-fruited with a line of fine tannin to close.

Best enjoyed over the next three to five years, lightly chilled, with grilled quail, salmon or a charcuterie board. Serve at 14-16°C.
