La Raison d’Hêtre Côtes de Bordeaux 2023

La Raison d’Hêtre is a Merlot-led Côtes de Bordeaux from the limestone and woodland country around Castillon.

Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux sits on the eastern edge of the Right Bank, continuing the limestone plateau that runs out from Saint-Émilion, and it has long been a source of well-priced Merlot-based reds. This wine, from L’Hêtre, is a blend of 83 per cent Merlot and 17 per cent Cabernet Franc, made in an immediately approachable style rather than one that demands cellaring. It is deeply coloured and medium-bodied, with a smoky, fruit-forward character of dark berries, bramble and spice underscored by a chalky minerality that reflects the limestone beneath. On the palate it is smooth and well balanced, with gentle tannins, fruit and oak integrated rather than layered, and a savoury, lingering finish.

Ready to drink now and over the next five years. Serve at 16-18°C with steak, lamb shanks or a mushroom and beef pie.
