Description
La Soufrandière Mâcon-Vinzelles Le Clos de Grand-Père is a biodynamic white Burgundy from a genuine walled clos on the lower part of the Pouilly-Vinzelles slope.
Mâcon-Vinzelles is one of the named village appellations of the southern Mâconnais, where Chardonnay is planted on limestone slopes that run down from the Pouilly-Fuissé escarpment. La Soufrandière is the estate arm of the Bret brothers, farmed biodynamically, and this cuvée comes from an old walled vineyard bought by their maternal grandfather, which is where the name comes from. The 0.7-hectare plot sits on very rocky, hard limestone bedrock that lies close to the surface and is believed to follow an old Roman path. Because it falls on the lower part of the Pouilly-Vinzelles slope, the fruit is classified as Mâcon-Vinzelles. Some vines here are more than a century old and the plot averages around 60 years. The wine was raised mostly in tank, with about ten per cent in old barrels, which keeps the fruit clear and the texture supple.
Approachable now and worth keeping three or four years. Serve at 10-12°C with roast chicken, goat's cheese or grilled whiting.
