La Soufrandière Mâcon-Vinzelles Le Clos de Grand-Père 2021

La Soufrandière Mâcon-Vinzelles Le Clos de Grand-Père comes from a genuine walled vineyard bought by the Bret brothers' maternal grandfather.

The 0.7-hectare clos sits on the lower part of the Pouilly-Vinzelles slope, which is why it is classified as Mâcon-Vinzelles rather than under the more prestigious name above it. The bedrock is very hard limestone lying close to the surface, and the site is believed to sit on an old Roman path. Some vines in the plot are now over a hundred years old and the average across it is around sixty. The vineyard is farmed biodynamically. The 2021 was raised mostly in tank with just 10 per cent old barrels, an approach that keeps the fruit clear and the texture taut. Lower-lying sites in the Mâconnais tend to give tenderness rather than tension, but this bottling combines flesh with a real line of citrus acidity that carries through to a mineral finish.

Drinking well now and holding four to six years. Serve at 10-12°C with grilled fish, roast chicken or a creamy risotto.
