La Soufrandière Mâcon-Vinzelles Le Clos de Grand-Père 2022

La Soufrandière's Mâcon-Vinzelles Le Clos de Grand-Père grows in a genuine walled vineyard thought to sit on an old Roman path, farmed biodynamically.

The clos lies on the lower part of the Pouilly-Vinzelles slope, which places it in the Mâcon-Vinzelles appellation rather than in Pouilly-Vinzelles itself. Hard limestone bedrock sits close to the surface and the ground is rocky throughout. The Bret brothers' maternal grandfather bought the site, hence the name. The plot runs to 0.7 hectares; average vine age is around 60 years and some plants are now over a century old. The estate has been certified biodynamic since 2006. As usual for this cuvée, the 2022 was mostly tank-raised, with only about 10 per cent held in old barrels and no new oak used anywhere in the cellar. From a lower-lying site that tends to give the most immediately appreciable wine in the range, it has notable energy this year, and it makes a good introduction to what the Brets do in the southern Mâconnais.

Drink over the next four or five years, with grilled fish, roast pork or a cheese soufflé. Serve at 10–12°C.
