La Soufrandière Pouilly-Vinzelles 2021

La Soufrandière Pouilly-Vinzelles is a biodynamic Mâconnais Chardonnay made from the parcels of Les Quarts that do not go into the estate’s top cuvée.

Pouilly-Vinzelles is a small appellation in the southern Mâconnais, and Les Quarts is its finest vineyard, divided into four historic lieux-dits: Haut, Bas, Le Clocheton and Les Quarts Touches. This wine blends those parcels not selected for La Soufrandière’s Les Quarts bottling. The slope sits at 230 metres on classic Bajocian clay and Jurassic limestone and has been certified biodynamic since 2006. The Bret brothers vinified this release mainly in tank, around 60 per cent, with the balance in older barriques. No new oak is used at the domaine — the average barrel age in the cellar is ten to twelve years, and casks are bought used from Leflaive, Lafon and Olivier Lamy. The result is a coiled, rocky style built on texture and length rather than weight.

Drinking now and over the next five to seven years. Serve at 10-12°C with grilled fish, roast chicken or a soft goat’s cheese.
