Description
La Soufrandière Pouilly-Vinzelles is drawn from the parcels of the Les Quarts vineyard that do not go into the domaine’s flagship cuvée.
Pouilly-Vinzelles is a small appellation in the southern Mâconnais, and Les Quarts is generally reckoned its finest site. The Bret brothers divide it into four lieux-dits, and this wine blends the parcels held back from the Les Quarts bottling, along with a small plot of Au Bourgeois in front of Les Bouchardières. The vines are 35 to 50 years old, planted at 230 metres on Bajocian clay over Jurassic limestone, and the slope has been certified biodynamic since 2006. Vinification is mainly in old barriques; the domaine uses no new oak at all, with an average barrel age of ten to twelve years, including casks bought used from Leflaive, Lafon and Olivier Lamy. The wine has drive and satiny depth with a tonic freshness running through it. Jean-Philippe Bret expects Les Quarts to be classified premier cru in coming vintages.
Drinking well now and worth five or six years. Serve at 10-12°C with roast chicken, grilled snapper or a leek and cheese tart.
