La Soufrandière Saint-Véran Climat La Bonnode comes from a two-hectare east-facing climat at Prissé, bought in partnership with Dominique Lafon.

Saint-Véran runs in two blocks around Pouilly-Fuissé in the southern Mâconnais and gives the more open, approachable side of Mâconnais Chardonnay. La Bonnode is one of the newer vineyards for the Bret brothers, a sheltered site facing due east just below a small forest at the foot of the Roche de Vergisson, planted to forty-year-old vines. The parcel had been farmed organically by its previous owners and has since been certified biodynamic; it also carries 0.3 hectares of old-vine Aligoté. It is a large plot with the rows running down the slope, so the grapes ripen in stages and have to be picked in successive passes. The wine is fermented and aged in barrel for its first year, then transferred to tank before the following harvest. The deeper soils here give a little more volume than the Pouilly-Vinzelles wines, without loosening the line.

Drinking now and over the next five or six years. Serve at 10-12°C with roast chicken, grilled snapper or a fresh chèvre.
