La Soufrandière Saint-Véran Climat La Bonnode 2021

La Soufrandière Saint-Véran Climat La Bonnode is a biodynamic single-climat Chardonnay from Prissé at the foot of the Roche de Vergisson.

Saint-Véran runs in two pockets either side of Pouilly-Fuissé in the southern Mâconnais, and Prissé is one of its better communes. La Soufrandière is the domaine of the Bret brothers, who also run the Bret Brothers négociant label, and this climat is a recent purchase made in partnership with Dominique Lafon. The forty-year-old vines face due east in a sheltered spot just below a small forest at the foot of the Roche de Vergisson. They are certified biodynamic and had been farmed organically by the previous owners; the same two-hectare plot is also home to 0.3 hectares of old-vine Aligoté. Because the rows run down a slope the grapes ripen in stages and must be picked in successive passes. The wine is fermented and aged for its first year in barrel, then racked to tank before the following harvest. From deeper soils it carries more volume and a riper profile than the domaine's Pouilly-Vinzelles, with floral prettiness, charged acidity and a nip of phenolic grip.

Drink over the next six or seven years. Serve at 10-12°C with roast pork, grilled prawns or a leek tart.
