La Soufrandière St-Véran La Combe Desroches 2022

La Soufrandière St-Véran La Combe Desroches is a linear, tank-raised Chardonnay from a north-facing parcel at the foot of the Roche de Vergisson.

Saint-Véran wraps around Pouilly-Fuissé in the southern Mâconnais, and its best sites sit on the limestone slopes below the great rocks of Vergisson and Solutré. La Combe Desroches is a 1.5-hectare parcel that La Soufrandière purchased in 2016. It was already managed biodynamically, and the Bret brothers have kept it that way while adding precision. The vineyard lies at the foot of the Roche de Vergisson on the north-facing side of the valley, on soils of eroded limestone and clay. Jean-Philippe Bret notes that the grapes reach good ripeness despite the cooler exposure, and that the site's water-holding capacity means it performs especially well in warm, dry seasons. Two-thirds of the blend is raised in tank rather than barrel, which is a deliberate choice to lock in tension and keep the wine straight-lined.

Drink over the next five or six years, with oysters, grilled fish or a goat's cheese salad. Serve at 10 to 12 degrees.
