Description
Laurent Roumier Hautes Côtes de Nuits rouge is a Pinot Noir grown in the high limestone hills behind the Côte de Nuits, made by a grower based in Chambolle-Musigny.
Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Nuits covers the plateau and the side combes that run west off the famous slope, where vineyards sit a hundred metres or more above the villages of the Côte de Nuits on thin soils over hard limestone. The extra altitude and the cooler, more exposed sites mean the fruit ripens a week or more later than it does below, so the reds are built on freshness and red-fruited lift rather than depth. Pinot Noir is the only red grape of the appellation. Growers here typically ferment in small vats and raise the wine in used barrel with little or no new oak, which keeps the emphasis on the fruit and the stony character of the hills.
A bright, easy-framed red for charcuterie, roast chicken and mushroom dishes; serve at around 15 degrees, a touch cooler than a village wine.
