Description
Les Cortis Obuscule Rouge is a semi-carbonic red co-fermenting Gamay with a third Chardonnay, from a single high plot near Bugey.
Les Cortis works in the hills near Bugey, on the fringe between the Rhône corridor and Savoie, where Gamay and Chardonnay have long shared the same slopes. Obuscule, the name meaning shell, is described by the estate as its quintessential spring wine: rich and complex but deliberately kept affordable. The blend is two-thirds Gamay and one-third Chardonnay, all from the La Côte plot, which sits at 330 metres on deep, loamy, rocky soils planted to vines of between forty-five and seventy-five years. The fruit ferments semi-carbonically for a fortnight, then matures for seven months in fibreglass tanks, a neutral vessel that leaves the fruit unmarked by oak. Bottling is done without fining or filtration and with only a small addition of sulphur.
Best drunk within three or four years, lightly chilled if you like, with charcuterie, roast chicken or a tomato tart. Serve at 14-16°C.
