Description
Les Cortis Vin de France Uzée Rouge blends Gamay with a third Mondeuse from a limestone-rich plot of very old vines near Bugey.
Uzée is the darker and more structured of the two Les Cortis reds, built around black fruit and a pronounced liquorice lift where the Obuscule is lighter and more immediate. The blend is two-thirds Gamay and one-third Mondeuse, the indigenous red of Savoie, which contributes tannin, pepper and firmness. Everything comes from La Route, a limestone-rich plot near Bugey where the oldest vines are around seventy years. The fruit ferments semi-carbonically for a fortnight, then matures for ten months divided between fibreglass tanks and demi-muids, so the oak component is small and the barrels are not new. As with the rest of the range, the wine is bottled unfined, unfiltered and with only minimal sulphur.
Approachable now and good for five years or so, it suits grilled sausages, hard cheeses or a mushroom and lentil braise. Serve at 15-17°C.
