Les Héritiers du Comte Lafon Mâcon-Milly Clos du Four 2022

Les Héritiers du Comte Lafon Mâcon-Milly Clos du Four is a single-vineyard Chardonnay from the Mâconnais, at the southern end of Burgundy.

Dominique Lafon, of Domaine des Comtes Lafon in Meursault, established this estate at Milly-Lamartine in 1999, at a point when the Mâconnais was still widely dismissed as a source of cheap Chardonnay. The vineyards are farmed biodynamically and the wines are made much as they are on the Côte de Beaune, with long, unhurried élevage. Clos du Four is a walled parcel in the village of Milly, whose full name honours Alphonse de Lamartine, the poet and statesman who spent his childhood there. The limestone hills here give Chardonnay a rather different footing from the Côte d'Or, and a generation of growers has now proved what they are capable of.

Serve at around eleven degrees with roast chicken, veal or richer fish; it will hold and improve for several years.
