Linnaea Apica Moscato d'Asti DOCG 2024

Linnaea Apica is a gently sparkling, low-alcohol Moscato d'Asti drawn from vineyards up to 90 years old in a cold pocket of the Monferrato hills.

Moscato d'Asti DOCG covers the hills of south-eastern Piedmont around Asti and Canelli, where Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains has been grown for centuries and is bottled young, sweet and only lightly fizzy. Linnaea works outside Canelli, the historic centre of the appellation, from two old parcels planted roughly 90 and 45 years ago in a cool site that holds acidity through the warmest summers. The grapes are hand-harvested early to keep the aromatics bright and the acid firm. Fermentation is run cold and arrested at 5% alcohol, so the sweetness is unfermented grape sugar rather than anything added. The lees are stirred to build mouthfeel and texture, which is unusual for the style, and the wine is held at 2.1 atmospheres of pressure, around half that of a Champagne, giving a soft foaming sparkle rather than a hard bead.

Drink it young and cold, at about 8°C. It suits fresh stone fruit, almond biscuits and blue cheese, and works equally as an aperitif or at the end of a meal.
