Description
Sandrone's Barbera d'Alba comes from four high, exposed sites in Barolo country and is matured in specially made untoasted barrels.
The fruit is drawn from Cascina Pe Mol in Monforte d'Alba, Ravera and Rocche di San Nicola in Novello, and Albarella in the commune of Barolo. At 350 to 450 metres these are among the highest and most exposed vineyards in the area, and that elevation supplies the freshness and vibrancy that carry the wine. Barbera is naturally high in acidity and low in tannin, so oak has to be handled with care: Sandrone matures the wine in 500-litre tonneaux, 40% of them new, and has untoasted barrels made in Burgundy specifically for this cuvée so the wood impact stays as discreet as possible. Young, a little of that wood shows on the nose; with time in bottle it integrates and the layered, polished character of the wine comes through.
Drinking now and good for six or eight years; serve at 16-18°C with vitello tonnato, braised sausage or a rich tomato pasta.
