Description
Aleste is Sandrone's flagship Barolo and is, as it always has been, 100% Cannubi Boschis, the vineyard most closely associated with this grower.
The Boschis subzone sits near the northern end of the Cannubi hill, directly across from the Sandrone cellars in the commune of Barolo. The family farms 1.9 hectares of 40-year-old vines there, in a small amphitheatre, or conca, with a particularly good south and southeast exposure that holds warmth in the early morning. The soils are marine deposits of calcareous clay with sand, so they drain freely. Alessandro Masnaghetti's survey of the Barolo crus notes that the wines of this sector generally show good body, marked elegance and more polished tannins than the rest of the Cannubi hill. Winemaking is identical to Le Vigne apart from a little longer on skins: a portion of whole bunches, a high proportion of whole berries in the destemmed fruit, and gentle, carefully managed maceration. Where Le Vigne is lifted, perfumed and more classical, Aleste is the fleshier and more layered of the two in youth.
Give it several years, or decant thoroughly if opening early; serve at 16-18°C with braised beef, roast game or aged Castelmagno.
