Luciano Sandrone Barolo Aleste Sibi et Paucis 1.5L MAGNUM 2013

This magnum of Sandrone Barolo Aleste Sibi et Paucis is a cellar-aged release of the estate's flagship Barolo, held back at the winery and issued a decade after harvest.

Cannubi is the most celebrated hill in the commune of Barolo, and Boschis is the subzone at its northern end, directly opposite the Sandrone cellars. Luciano Sandrone farms 1.9 hectares of forty-year-old vines here on a south to south-east facing slope that forms a small amphitheatre, or conca, holding warmth through the early morning. The soils are marine deposits of calcareous clay with a sand fraction, which drains freely, and the cru is known for good body with more polished tannins than the rest of the hill. Renamed Aleste in recent vintages after Sandrone's grandchildren, the wine remains entirely Cannubi Boschis fruit, fermented on wild yeasts and aged in mostly used 500-litre French oak casks. Sibi et Paucis, 'for the few and favoured', is the estate's museum programme: a share of each Nebbiolo bottling stays in the underground cellars and is re-released ten years on, stamped on the label. The 1.5-litre format ages more slowly again.

Ready to pour and capable of long further keeping in this size. Serve at 16-18°C with braised beef cheek, wild mushroom risotto or aged Castelmagno.
