Luciano Sandrone Barolo Vite Talin 2019

Vite Talin is made from a distinct clone of Nebbiolo that Luciano Sandrone identified in 1987 and propagated slowly over the following decades.

The clone now carries the official name Vite Talin, and it is one of Sandrone's lasting legacies. The fruit comes from three small plots in Barolo, Le Coste, Drucà and Rivassi, where the family has planted it. Only about 8,000 vines are in production, yielding roughly 2,000 bottles a year. What makes the clone unusual is berry size: a Vite Talin berry averages half the weight of ordinary Nebbiolo, under a gram in a typical year against about 2.2 grams from Cannubi. The skin-to-juice ratio is therefore much higher and the juice considerably denser, and the winemaking is adapted to suit, with extended macerations followed by three years in large 2,500-litre botti and a further three years in bottle before release. The style leans mineral, ferrous and darkly fruited, classical in structure yet still finely detailed.

Built for the long haul, so decant generously or cellar for a decade or more; serve at 16-18°C with braised beef or aged hard cheese.
