Description
Sandrone's Dolcetto is drawn from eleven separate plots inside the Barolo DOCG and sees no wood at all.
Dolcetto ripens early and is traditionally given the cooler, less favoured sites in the Langhe, the best south-facing slopes being kept for Nebbiolo. It is deeply coloured, moderate in acidity and finishes with the gentle bitterness the Piedmontese prize, and it is largely the wine growers drink themselves. Luciano Sandrone bought his first vines on Cannubi in 1977, made his first wine in his parents' garage in 1978 and opened a cellar at the foot of the hill in 1998; the estate is now run by his daughter Barbara, who has looked after its daily business since the 1990s. The Dolcetto comes from eleven vineyards within the Barolo zone, farmed to the same low yields as the Nebbiolo, and is raised without oak, so nothing stands between the fruit and the glass.
Best drunk young, within two or three years, and it takes a light chill well. Serve at 16°C with salumi, pizza or a plate of agnolotti.
