Luciano Sandrone Dolcetto d'Alba 2022

Sandrone Dolcetto d'Alba is drawn from eleven high-altitude parcels across the Barolo communes, a serious reading of a grape usually treated as an everyday wine.

Dolcetto ripens early and buds late, so growers in the Langhe have long planted it on sites that will not carry Nebbiolo. Sandrone takes the opposite view and gives it prime ground. The estate vineyards in Monforte d'Alba contribute Castelletto and Cascina Pe Mol, the latter at the top of the ridge running towards the hamlet of Perno and among the highest vineyards of the zone. From Novello come Rocche di San Nicola and the whitish marls of Ravera, whose easterly aspect adds aromatic lift, and from the commune of Barolo, Rivassi and Crosia. Vine age now averages more than fifty years. Around eleven parcels feed the blend in a typical year, each vinified separately before assembly, with anything below standard sold off. Ageing is in tank, so the fruit and the fine tannins are left unmasked by oak.

Drink over the next three to five years, lightly chilled if you like. Serve at 16-18°C with salumi, veal meatballs or a plate of tajarin.
