Description
Sandrone's Dolcetto d'Alba is drawn from a cadre of top Barolo-country vineyards, which is unusual for a variety normally given second-rank sites.
The blend typically draws on eleven parcels: Castelletto and Cascina Pe Mol in Monforte d'Alba, Rocche di San Nicola and Ravera in Novello, and Rivassi and Crosia in the commune of Barolo. Vine age averages over 50 years, which counts for a great deal with a variety that ripens early and can turn simple. Each parcel was vinified separately before blending, and the wines were aged in tank rather than wood, so nothing stands between the fruit and the glass. Any lot that does not make the grade is sold off. Dolcetto is naturally low in acidity and firmer in tannin than its name suggests, and handled this way it gives a wine of purity, silky texture and fine grip rather than the rustic everyday red the appellation often produces.
At its best in the first three or four years; serve at 16°C, slightly cool, with salumi, braised sausage or a mushroom pasta.
