Luciano Sandrone Valmaggiore Nebbiolo d'Alba Sibi et Paucis 1.5L MAGNUM 2019

This is a cellar-aged museum release of Sandrone's Valmaggiore, a Nebbiolo from the sandy terraces of the Roero, held back at the winery and released six years after harvest.

Valmaggiore is a steep, sandy, amphitheatre-shaped vineyard in the Roero, on the left bank of the Tanaro, and Luciano Sandrone established his terraces there some three decades ago when almost nobody outside the area took Roero Nebbiolo seriously. Sand gives a paler, more perfumed and finer-boned wine than the clay of Barolo, closer in feel to Burgundy than to Serralunga. Sibi et Paucis, roughly for the few and the favoured, is the family's museum programme: each year 10 to 15% of production of the Nebbiolo wines is held back in the winery's underground cellars under ideal conditions, then re-released closer to maturity. Valmaggiore is released six years after the harvest, the Barolos after ten. Each museum bottle carries a stamp on the label to distinguish it from the original release. Vinification is unchanged from the standard bottling, with maturation in old French demi-muid.

In magnum, which slows development further; drinking now, and best served at 16-18°C with roast duck, mushroom pasta or aged Toma.
