Lucien Muzard Pommard Les Cras 2023

Lucien Muzard Pommard Les Cras is a village Pommard from a single named lieu-dit on the commune's stony upper slope.

Pommard sits between Beaune and Volnay and makes red wine only. Its reputation rests on iron rich clay and limestone scree that give Pinot Noir more colour, tannin and grip than almost anywhere else on the Côte de Beaune, which is why Pommard has long been the appellation reached for when a Burgundy needs to age. The commune has no grand cru, its summit being the premiers crus Les Rugiens on the Volnay side and Les Épenots towards Beaune. Les Cras is a village level lieu-dit on better drained, stonier ground, generally giving a slightly finer wine than the heavy clay of the flatter parcels. Domaine Lucien Muzard is a family estate based further south in Santenay.

Broad shouldered and firmly tannic when young, it repays cellaring and suits beef, venison and mature hard cheese; serve at around 17 degrees.
