Mader Gewurztraminer Rosacker 2019

Mader Gewurztraminer Rosacker is a Grand Cru Gewurztraminer from the limestone hill above Hunawihr.

Rosacker is best known for Riesling, but its dolomitic limestone also carries Gewurztraminer, and the high active lime content gives the variety a structural backbone it rarely finds elsewhere. Jean-Luc Mader farms his Grand Cru parcels organically and picks late in the season for full ripeness. The must is fermented slowly in stainless steel and the fermentation is left to stop of its own accord, which here leaves 37.8 grams per litre of residual sugar, so the wine sits between off-dry and properly sweet. It is held on fine lees for texture, bottled under screwcap without oak and given several years in the cellar before release.

Concentrated and only moderately sweet, it works as an aperitif, with Munster, or with foie gras and spiced poultry; serve at 10 degrees.
