Description
Maison C. Thiriet Côte de Nuits Villages Les Retraits is a whole-bunch Pinot Noir from sixty-year-old vines on the edge of Nuits-Saint-Georges.
The southern end of the Côte de Nuits-Villages appellation runs through Comblanchien and Corgoloin, where hard limestone sits close to the surface and the wines take on a stony, perfumed character rather than the depth of the grand cru villages further north. Camille Thiriet works from Comblanchien, making small volumes from purchased and estate fruit with minimal handling in the cellar. Les Retraits lies right on the border of Comblanchien, at the point where Côte de Nuits-Villages meets the Clos de la Maréchale in Nuits-Saint-Georges, and the vines here are pushing sixty years of age. The winemaking was deliberately gentle: 100 per cent whole bunches and no punch-downs at all, so the extraction comes only from the weight of the fruit itself. The result is a bright, perfumed Pinot Noir of real finesse, with the vineyard's proximity to Nuits showing in its shape. It is sealed with natural cork.
Drink now or cellar for six to eight years. Serve at 16°C with roast quail, pork belly or a beetroot and goat's cheese salad.
