Description
Maison Ponsot Saint-Romain Cuvée de la Mésange is a white Burgundy from a high side valley behind Auxey-Duresses, bottled under the Maison label because the vineyard has never belonged to the domaine.
Saint-Romain occupies a high-lying valley at the cool western edge of the Côte de Beaune, where altitude and limestone-rich, stony ground give whites of clarity and tension rather than weight. The source vineyard for this cuvée is rugged and typical of the appellation, though the wine itself is not: it carries a texture, complexity and generosity rarely seen at this level in Saint-Romain. The Ponsot family, long associated with Morey-Saint-Denis, has always bought fruit here rather than owning the land, which is why the bottling now appears as Maison Ponsot rather than Domaine. A mésange is a small songbird, and the name is a nod to the lift the wine shows. The grapes are now whole-bunch pressed and the juice vinified with a greater proportion of solids, which builds a vibrant but layered and comparatively generous white Burgundy.
Delicious young and best drunk within about five years; serve at 10–12°C with roast chicken, grilled whiting or a young washed-rind cheese.
