Description
Maison Ponsot Saint-Romain Cuvée de la Mésange is a white Burgundy from bought-in fruit, bottled under the family's négociant label rather than the domaine name.
Saint-Romain lies in a high valley behind Auxey-Duresses, well back from the main run of the Côte de Beaune, and its cool, limestone-rich, stony vineyards usually give lean, straightforward whites. The Ponsot source vineyard is typical of that terrain, but the wine is not: it has a texture and depth rarely found at this address. A mésange is a small songbird, which is where the cuvée takes its name. The fruit is now bunch-pressed and vinified with a higher proportion of solids, which builds the palate without adding weight. Because the vineyard has never been owned by the domaine, the family labels the wine as Maison Ponsot.
Delicious young and best over its first five years. Serve at 10-12°C with grilled prawns, roast chicken or a goat's cheese tart.
