Description
Maison Ponsot Saint-Romain Cuvée de la Mésange is a négociant bottling from a stony, high-lying vineyard behind Auxey-Duresses.
A mésange is a small songbird, and the name suits a wine from one of the cooler corners of the Côte de Beaune. Saint-Romain lies in a high valley behind Auxey-Duresses, where the vineyards sit higher than most on the Côte and the limestone is close to the surface. The source vineyard is rugged and stony, with 30-year-old vines rooted in marl scored with chalky scree. The Ponsot family, long established in Morey-Saint-Denis, label wines from vineyards outside their own holdings under the Maison name. The fruit is now bunch-pressed and the wine vinified with a higher proportion of solids, which has added texture and layering to a wine from an appellation more often associated with leanness.
Drink from release to about six years; serve with grilled fish, roast chicken or a gruyère tart at 10-12°C.
