Maison Ponsot Saint-Romain Cuvée de la Mésange 2023

Maison Ponsot Saint-Romain Cuvée de la Mésange comes from a rugged, rocky 30-year-old vineyard in the high valley behind Auxey-Duresses.

Saint-Romain sits in a side valley off the main Côte de Beaune slope, higher and cooler than its neighbours, on thin limestone soils. It has long been a source of taut, honest white Burgundy at sensible prices, and warming seasons have done the appellation a considerable favour. A mésange is a small songbird, keeping to the Ponsot habit of naming its cuvées after birds. The Maison arm buys fruit from growers, and this source vineyard is typical of the appellation in its cool aspect and rocky, limestone-rich ground, with vines around thirty years old. In the cellar the fruit is now pressed in whole bunches and vinified with a higher proportion of solids in the juice, which builds texture. The result carries more layering and generosity than Saint-Romain usually shows.

Drinking now and worth keeping four or five years. Serve at 10-12°C with roast chicken, scallops or a soft goat's cheese.
