Mas de Libian Côtes du Rhône Khayyâm 2021

Mas de Libian Côtes du Rhône Khayyâm is a biodynamic Grenache-led red from a single galet-strewn plateau above the domaine.

The wine is named after Omar Khayyam, the eleventh-century Persian poet, mathematician and enthusiastic drinker. Mas de Libian sits on the right bank of the Rhône at Saint-Marcel-d'Ardèche, where Hélène Thibon farms biodynamically, and this cuvée comes entirely from one highland plot above the house at the top of the plateau. The site is littered with galets roulés, the rolled stones more often associated with Châteauneuf-du-Pape, and was planted between 1960 and 1980, mostly to Grenache with 10 per cent Syrah and 15 per cent Mourvèdre. Around 30 per cent of the fruit is aged in large casks on lees, which brings a supple, layered texture to what is otherwise a bright, cleansing structure. The style is fresh and perfumed rather than heavy, with a peppery southern lift.

Drink over the next five years with grilled lamb, sausages or a vegetable tagine. Serve at 16 degrees.
