Description
Massolino Barbaresco Albesani is drawn from 0.6 hectares at the top of the cru, the parcel with the poorest blue marl soils and the oldest vines.
Barbaresco sits east of Alba on marl soils that are generally richer and slightly warmer than Serralunga's, which is why the wines tend to open earlier than Barolo without giving up Nebbiolo's structure. Albesani lies on the western hills above Neive and is among the appellation's most revered sites; Alessandro Masnaghetti's Barbaresco MGA singles out its combination of soil, stature and exposure as one of the finest in the Langhe. Massolino, better known as a Serralunga house, bottled this cru separately from the earliest days on account of its finesse. Of the two hectares the family farms here, only 0.6 hectares go into this wine, taken from the highest part of the vineyard at about 260 metres where the blue marl is poorest and the vines are around 50 years old. Fermentation and ageing follow the house pattern of large wooden vessels rather than barriques.
Worth three to five years in bottle and good for fifteen or more. Serve at 16-18°C alongside veal shin, porcini pasta or a well-aged Toma.
