Massolino Barolo Margheria 1.5L MAGNUM 2022

Massolino Barolo Margheria is a single-vineyard Barolo from just 1.5 hectares on one of Serralunga d'Alba's most illustrious sites, offered here in magnum.

Barolo is Nebbiolo's home ground in the Langhe hills of Piedmont, and Serralunga d'Alba is its most firmly structured commune, a narrow ridge of calcareous soils that gives wines of tannic spine and long life. The Massolino family has farmed in the village since 1896 and bought their first parcel of Margheria in 1964, adding further land through the 1970s; the holding still runs to only 1.5 hectares. Margheria sits at around 280 metres on a chalky, sandy site whose high calcium carbonate content is the source of both its mineral drive and its reputation for perfume rather than sheer weight. Fermentation is carried out in large oak fermenters and the wine is then aged exclusively in large casks, a traditional regime that keeps oak flavour out of the way of the fruit. Among the Serralunga crus this is the graceful one, about as Chambolle-like as Barolo gets.

Drinkable after about five years and, in magnum, capable of two decades or more. Serve at 16-18°C with braised beef cheek, mushroom risotto or aged Castelmagno.
