Description
Massolino Barolo Margheria in double magnum is a single-cru Barolo from a chalky Serralunga parcel the family has held since 1964.
Margheria is one of Serralunga d’Alba’s most illustrious sites, and Massolino bought their first parcel here in 1964, adding the remainder through the 1970s to reach the present 1.5 hectares. The vineyard sits at around 280 metres and is notably chalky, with a good proportion of sand that lends elegance, while a high calcium carbonate content brings a mineral drive to the natural depth that Serralunga fruit always carries. The family has worked in the commune since 1896 and treats its three crus identically in the cellar, so differences in the glass come from site rather than technique. This was fermented in large conical oak fermenters with around two weeks on skins, aged in botti for 30 months and then held a further year in bottle before release, giving a wine that is perfumed and finely drawn but has no shortage of structure.
The three-litre format ages slowly and is made for the long haul and for a table of people; serve at 16–18°C with slow-cooked veal, porcini pasta or a hard alpine cheese.
