Description
Massolino Barolo Parafada comes from the family's first prime parcel in Serralunga, planted in 1957 and still home to its oldest vines.
Parafada lies between Gabutti and Lazzarito, a 1.2-hectare parcel that rises steeply from 300 to 340 metres and faces due south, taking the full face of the sun. The vines planted in 1957 remain the oldest Massolino farms. The soils belong to the Formazione di Lequio and are dense, with clay, marl and a strong lime content; together with the aspect and the age of the vines they give a denser and more powerful wine than neighbouring Margheria. Fermentation is in large oak fermenters and ageing exclusively in large casks, the same approach used across the range of crus, with no new barriques to blur the site. Parafada is typically the Massolino Barolo that asks for the most time before it opens out.
Cellar it if you can, and decant generously if you cannot. Serve at 16–18°C with braised beef, roast hare or a well-aged Toma.
