Description
Massolino Barolo Parussi in magnum comes from the only cru the family owns outside Serralunga d'Alba, and no other producer bottles this vineyard on its own.
Parussi sits on the crest of the ridge in Castiglione Falletto, immediately across the Serralunga boundary. Its blue, iron-rich Sant'Agata marls are lighter and more oxygenated than Serralunga's, with a higher proportion of silt and less clay, which lends the vines vigour and gives a style quite unlike the estate's home commune. The Massolino family were attracted by the excellent south-east to south-west exposure, the 45-year-old vines and the elevation of 290 metres. The wine is fermented and aged in large oak, with roughly two weeks on skins. It shows more pungent depth and firmer tannin than the Serralunga bottlings while keeping the estate's sense of proportion. The 1.5-litre format slows its development further.
Cellar for a decade or more, or decant several hours ahead; serve at 16-18C with brasato, roast hare or aged Parmigiano.
