Massolino Barolo Parussi 2019

Massolino Barolo Parussi is the only cru the family owns outside Serralunga d'Alba, and Massolino remains the only producer to bottle it as a single vineyard.

Parussi lies on the crest of the ridge in Castiglione Falletto, right on the Serralunga border, and Piedmontese growers call a holding like this the egg outside the nest. The blue, iron-rich Sant'Agata marls here are lighter and better aerated than Serralunga's, with more silt and less clay, which gives the vines more vigour and produces a distinctly different style of wine. The family was drawn by the south-east to south-west exposure, the vine age of around 45 years and the elevation of 290 metres. Fermentation and ageing are in large oak, with around two weeks on skins. The result carries more pungent depth and firmer tannin than the Serralunga wines, and reads clearly as Castiglione Falletto.

Give it five to ten years, or decant well ahead; serve at 16-18C with brasato, roast hare or aged Parmigiano.
